St Matthew’s Parish is under the canonical jurisdiction of the Romanian Orthodox Diocese in Canada which is based in Saint Hubert ( Montreal). It is led by His Eminence Bishop Ioan Casian. Our Diocese follows the Romanian Patriarchate which is based in Bucharest.
St. Matthew’s Parish was established September 14, 1981 and started operations on December 25, 1982.
St. Matthew’s Parish Priest is Grigorie Tapuc, who began serving October 16, 2005. He was appointed to be the church’s parish priest on June 26, 2009.
During the month of April of 2010, St. Matthew’s Parish bought a property located at 19 Cordova St. in Ottawa. It was worth $400,000.00 CAD.
The St. Liturgy celebrated on Sundays and holidays is the main activity of St. Matthew Church and Saint Great Martyr Hristina as well as what is requested by the faithful church members.
Priest Grigorie Tapuc is legally entitled to register marriages in Ontario’s official marriage records due to his marriage license.
Matthew’s Parish does not charge for baptisms, marriages, and/or funerals.
The Church does not use government funds or funds from the Diocese, or other forms of aid. All funds come from the donations given by the faithful, annual membership fees, donations from members and other voluntary donations.
Supporters and members of the Church are asked to provide constant monthly donations to help in an easier planning of the parish and better planning of the annual budget. We managed to collect sums needed to start construction work of the church. Monthly donations can be made by post- dated monthly checks. Any amount is welcome, but for details, please contact one of the parish councilors. There can be a receipt from donations for Income Tax.
Church activities whether spiritual, social or cultural – are held exclusively by volunteers – anyone being able to help in relation to their personal schedule, power, or skills.
The choir is important in carrying the St. Liturgy by keeping the Romanian Christian Orthodox spirituality alive. Those interested in joining the choir are asked to contact Mr. Viorel Onut. Choir rehearsals usually take place on Wednesday evenings.
Choir concerts are held by Choir Incognito. It is organized by Viorel Onut at our church. There are recordings of the concerts on CD’s which are available for sale.
Romanian Sunday school is held in the basement of the church and operates under the guidance of Mrs. Ioana Cimpoeru and Mihaela Tapuc. The Sunday School is based on the program sent from the Diocese.
Administrative activities whether pastoral or social of the Church are coordinated with the Parish Priest and Parish Council members. Parish Council members present are:
